Wildlife value in a garden comes as much from layout as from individual plant choices. A layered structure, trees or large shrubs at the back, mid-height planting beneath, and ground cover or climbers filling the gaps, mimics the natural habitat edges that many species evolved to use, giving insects, birds and small mammals shelter at every level.

Design has a big influence on how well a pond gets used. A shallow, gently sloping edge, sometimes called a beach area, lets amphibians bee and pollinator garden supplies insects get in and out easily, and gives small mammals that fall in an escape route rather than a hazard. Planting in distinct zones, marginal plants at the shallow edge, floating plants across the surface, and oxygenating plants below, gives different creatures the cover and conditions they need.

Feeding is straightforward but worth getting right. Meaty cat or dog food, or a specialist hedgehog food, is a better choice than bread and milk, which can cause digestive upset. A shallow dish of fresh water left out overnight is just as useful as food, particularly during dry spells in summer.

A pond set up with the right planting and shelter from the outset tends to attract amphibians naturally over time. Many gardeners begin with a considered selection of pond wildlife equipment chosen to suit the size of pond they are working with.

Building a planting scheme with wildlife in mind alongside the usual food and shelter provisions rounds out the picture. A well-stocked feeding station, including a reliable source of bumblebee food, complements planting choices particularly well during gaps in flowering.

For gardeners wanting an alternative to chemical sprays, a soil-applied option is worth considering as a first step, and a good starting point is a range of slug nematodes for gardens suited to the pest in question.
