The flush plate itself is usually the first point of failure a customer notices, whether that is a button that has stopped actuating, a plate that has come loose from the wall, or a dual-flush mechanism that only performs a full flush regardless of which button is pressed. Because the plate connects to the cistern through a spindle or cable rather than sitting directly on top of it, the fault could sit at the plate, along the linkage, or at the flush valve itself, and each of those needs a different part.

A side-entry valve introducing water above the surface tends to produce more splash and a higher-pitched fill sound, which shows up as a complaint on quieter properties such as flats with shared walls. Bottom-entry valves that fill below the surface are noticeably quieter, and swapping a noisy side-entry unit for a bottom-entry equivalent is a common upgrade even where nothing has technically failed.

A close-coupled cistern bolts directly onto the back of the pan with no visible pipework between the two. Because the outlet on the cistern base sits directly above the inlet on the pan, the flush valve or siphon needs a shorter outlet and often a rubber doughnut washer to seal the joint rather than a length of pipe. Fill valves on close-coupled units tend to be shorter in the body too, since there is less depth inside a compact tank.
