Researching the adult size of a species, and the enclosure dimensions that go with it, before bringing the animal home avoids the costly cycle of upgrading tanks every few months.

Enclosure is the more general, catch-all term that avoids the debate entirely, and it's increasingly the word used in care guidance because it doesn't imply a specific style of build. A glass-fronted wooden cabinet, a mesh-sided setup for arboreal species, and a fully planted bioactive tank could all reasonably be called an enclosure, regardless of whether someone else in the hobby would call them a vivarium or a terrarium.

Bundled starter vivarium kits are a popular route into reptile keeping, sold as a single package rather than a list of separate components. They can genuinely simplify a first purchase, but the word "kit" covers a wide range of what's actually included, and assuming a kit covers everything a species needs is one of the more common early mistakes.

Hides matter more than new keepers often expect. Most reptiles need at least a warm-end hide and a cool-end hide so they can thermoregulate by choosing where to sit, and a nervous animal without anywhere to retreat to will show it in its behaviour.
